EYFS at Pucklechurch Primary

Our Foundation Stage provision offers the necessary balance of ‘teacher-led’ input and ‘pupil-initiated’ learning. We create a supportive, stimulating context in the school indoor and outdoor learning areas, for children to play and engage in enquiry, discovery and reflection. We want our children to be confident in expressing their ideas, happy to make independent choices and keen to explore the world around them.

We aim to make the learning relevant to the children’s lives though our EYFS themes and colourful, lively, learning environment, and we place the pupils’ individual interests and choices at the heart of the classroom so they feel unique, safe, secure and ready to explore.

The Reception provision is centred round the children’s all-round development according to the EYFS Framework – development of key skills such as writing, reading and mathematics, as well as essential social, personal, creative, communication and physical development goals.

At Pucklechurch we value the importance of oracy skills. Once a week the children take part in 'helicopter stories' - this is where the children have an opportunity to narrate their own story and act them out in front of the class - their very own story comes alive! This develops their language skills, confidence and literacy skills.

We use our Reception practitioners’ skills and expertise to create routines, build relationships, develop activities and resources in a rich learning environment which provide pupils with the opportunities and conditions to flourish in all aspects of their development. We provide balance across the areas of learning and look to identify each child’s specific needs, strengths and next steps, so that they can make excellent progress.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Communication and Language are at the heart of the Reception provision and are what our staff concern themselves with every moment of each day to ensure the environment and the relationships are right for each child to flourish as a unique individual.

The key aspects of effective learning set down in the statutory framework are also at the heart of the Pucklechurch Primary vision and values:

'Friendship', 'Courage', 'Respect', 'Generosity', 'Compassion' and 'Forgiveness'.

Term 6

This term we are focusing on our school value - COURAGE. We will learn how to overcome challenges, be brave and show courage! Our literacy text is 'Handa's Surprise' - we will be discussing how Handa showed courage during her trip to the next village, past all of the wild animals, to deliver some fruit to her friend! We will use the story to promote learning in the wider curriculum - we will develop our understanding of different countries and learn about Africa. We will taste and learn about different fruit and discuss healthy eating. We will read non-fiction books to research African animals - this will perpare us for our exciting trip to Wild Place! We will look at repeating patterns on the animals. In phonics, we are focusing on writing and reading longer words, we are revising the sight words we have already learnt.  In maths, we will be focusing on doubles, halving and sharing equally! In expressive arts and design we will be making Handa's surprise puppets to act out the story.
