Spanish at Pucklechurch

Curriculum intent

We aim for our children to:

  • Develop an interest in learning another language in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating
  • Aspire to be curious about the language and deepen their understanding of the world around them
  • Be exposed to a different language, enabling them to believe in themselves and build confidence within themselves whilst demonstrating tolerance and respect for other cultures
  • Achieve the foundational knowledge needed to learn further languages as well as giving them the skills to study and work in other countries further down the line.

The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

    • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources;
    • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation;
    • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures they have learnt;
    • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Curriculum implementationSpanish

This year, we are excited to introduce Spanish as our chosen language.

In KS1 and KS2, children are taught Spanish by their class teacher.

In KS1, children will sing songs and play games to prepare children for the statutory Spanish lessons in KS2.

In KS2, children will take part in lessons where they will learn to speak, understand and write basic Spanish. They will learn vocabulary relating to themselves and their lives and will hold conversations reflecting everyday situations. They will also find out about the customs, traditions and everyday life in Spanish speaking countries.

Children are exposed to Spanish throughout the day, from taking the register in the morning, writing the date to listening to instructions in Spanish throughout the school day.

The document below shows the progression of skills from years 3 - 6. This outlines the different skills that they will be working on throughout their time here at Pucklechurch.

Impact

Through the use of Language Angels, a scheme to support our Spanish teaching, the children have regular opportunities to practise and rehearse basic phrases in Spanish. During the day,  children are provided with further opportunities to practise their Spanish such as greetings during the register. Over time, our children will become more confident and proficient in speaking Spanish as they will build upon what they have previously learnt.
