PSHE
Intent
At Pucklechurch, we believe that personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. All schools should teach PSHE, drawing on good practice, and this expectation is outlined in the introduction to the national curriculum. We work hard to make sure that our children are able to discuss their emotions effectively, develop strong empathy skills and learn about the importance of protecting their physical and mental health.
Implementation
At Pucklechurch, we are a Flagship School for a program called Jigsaw (www.jigsawpshe.com) which is a specially selected PSHE programme to reflect the needs of our pupils, designed to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. Jigsaw works within the protected characteristics as stated in the Equality Act.
There are 6 Jigsaw Puzzles (half-termly units) designed so the whole school can study the same learning themes at the same time, each year group at its own level. The Puzzles are sequential and developmental throughout each academic year, and linked to our School Values:
Each unit begins with a special assembly to launch the puzzle piece and children are regularly able to share the thoughts and activities which have come out of their lessons with their peers in these assemblies.
PSHE lessons, or Jigsaw lessons as teaching staff and children sometimes call them, are delivered weekly and are structured around a mindful, respectful and open approach to encourage deep discussion and focus on what it takes to develop physically, mentally and spiritually as a human being.
During term 6, we also teach our Relationships, Health & Sex Education (RHE) lessons, also a part of Jigsaw. Each year, we inform parents of these lessons and invite them in to present the materials beforehand so that parents are aware of what content is being shared with each year group. Teachers are given refresher training each year to ensure that the lessons are delivered faithfully and sensitively. Parents were invited to attend a session on the 14th of June with the lead coordinator to explore what is contained during the RHE portion of the Jigsaw year.
You may find the guides below useful for finding out more about the RHE curriculum.
If you would like to know more about this essential part of your child's education, please do not hesitate to contact the PSHE Coordinator, Gemma Jones.
